How much does a syndicated columnist make?

Been googling it, no articles have solid numbers.

how much does a freelance writer make if he/she writes two columns a week? typically speaking...ranging from local papers to big papers like the new york times.

also, is the san francisco chronicle considered a big paper? thats the closest big city and im unsure if its as big as the chicago tribune or the new york times and such. How much does a syndicated columnist make?
What a syndicated columnist makes depends totally on how many papers take his/her column. Each paper pays a small fee for every column the choose to run. (Payment goes to AP or UPI or Washington Post Group, for examples.) The size of the fee varies with the size of the newspaper. And I can't tell you what columnists make as I have no clue. But the top ones, who have their column in hundreds of papers, seem to adopt a fairly lavish lifestyle.
